Whether you are an experienced clinician or new to the field of substance abuse treatment, our curriculum can help prepare you to implement Contingency Management for Emerging Adults (CM-EA); an evidence-based treatment for addiction. Our certification program was developed with the funding support of the National Institute of Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH-NIDA) and was designed to encourage excellence in addictions treatment. This training blends the behavioral principles of CM with CBT in a comprehensive training course.
This interactive, multimedia course will teach you evidence-based cognitive and behavioral strategies to effectively treat young adult clients presenting with substance abuse or misuse. Learn to conceptualize clients substance use and the triggers of use, structure treatment, conduct ABC assessments to identify thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to substance use, develop behavior plans that utilize rewards to celebrate treatment successes, elicit and evaluate clients’ automatic thoughts around use, engage family or other support people in their ecology to help support treatment, and develop self-management plans to support treatment gains long after treatment has ended.
CM-EA Target Population
Contingency Management for Emerging Adults and Adults (CM-EA) is intended for young adults ages 18-26 who are:
- Exhibiting early abuse, abuse, or dependence on drugs or alcohol.
- Experiencing a disruption in their life and development due to their drug or alcohol use which can include arrest, probation/parole, poor school/work attendance, or performance and/or difficulties in their home life or relationships.
- Emerging adults with co-occurring problems (depression, anxiety, etc.) are appropriate for CM-EA assuming that those problems can also be addressed in the treatment.
CM-EA Training Information
All training is Online, on-demand, and self-directed.
This training will help you master the theory and foundations of contingency management while also helping you recognize commons barriers to implementation and how to overcome them. You will learn the “why” and the “how” of CM including how to develop rewards plans, complete functional assessments and bring families and caregivers into supportive roles. Videos and session transcripts will demonstrate the skills with downloadable session prep tools to help you prepare for sessions.

 | Exposure | This level is designed for professionals who are interested in learning the CM-EA treatment model. This is an online course that offers all of the essentials to help you develop basic competency in this model.  | Level 1 | This level provides the essentials of CM but builds your core skills with advanced conceptualization and individualized instruction from our expert Lead Trainers. Clinicians who complete the Level I certification can identify themselves as a certified CM-EA provider.  | Level 2 | This level includes everything you would receive in E Level and Level 1 training as well as specialty workshops designed for advanced professionals, individualized instruction, identification as a CM-EA Expert and the ability to then supervise providers in this model.
